Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral, Girardota, Cathedral in Girardota, Colombia
Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Girardota, Colombia, built in the Romanesque Revival style with a rectangular layout. It has one central nave and two side naves separated by cylindrical brick columns and thick load-bearing walls.
Construction began in 1890, based on designs by French architect Charles Emile Carre, and the building was completed in 1922. This long building period shaped the religious life of the town across two generations.
The cathedral houses a revered image of the Fallen Lord of Girardota, drawing pilgrims from across the region who leave prayers and offerings at the shrine. Visitors can observe how people express personal devotion in front of this image.
The cathedral is open on Sundays for services and on weekdays for prayer and visits. Visitors should dress modestly and keep noise to a minimum, as the building remains an active place of worship.
After a 1979 earthquake, engineers added concrete reinforcements inside the walls without touching the original brick or arches. This approach meant the exterior appearance of the building stayed exactly as it was before.
