Spain Library, Library park in Santo Domingo Savio, Medellín, Colombia.
Spain Library is a public library and park in the Santo Domingo Savio neighborhood of Medellín, made up of three connected dark stone buildings set on a hillside. The buildings contain reading rooms, learning areas, and community spaces, while the outdoor grounds offer open terraces overlooking the valley below.
The library opened in 2007 with funding from the Spanish government as part of a broader effort to bring public facilities to underserved neighborhoods in Medellín. The inauguration was attended by the Spanish royal family, which drew international attention to the project.
The library is a meeting point for people from the neighborhood, who come for readings, film screenings, and concerts held in its spaces. These events are aimed especially at children and young people from the surrounding area.
The library is reached by taking Metrocable Line K to Santo Domingo station, then walking a short distance to the entrance. Entry is free, and the outdoor grounds have seating and restrooms available for visitors.
The three buildings were designed by Colombian architect Giancarlo Mazzanti to resemble large rocks resting on the hillside when seen from a distance. The shape was chosen to let the structures blend into the surrounding landscape rather than stand out from it.
