The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is a neoclassical cathedral on the main square of Santa Fe de Antioquia, Colombia, with a single tower that rises well above the surrounding rooftops. The interior is divided into three naves separated by arches resting on Tuscan columns.
Construction began in 1797, designed by Domingo de Petrés, a Spanish monk who worked across colonial Colombia. The building took shape during a period when neoclassical forms were starting to replace the older baroque style in the region's religious architecture.
The cathedral remains the religious center of Santa Fe de Antioquia and draws worshippers from across the surrounding region every week. Inside, colonial-era paintings and sculptures line the walls, giving the space a strong sense of local devotion.
The cathedral faces the main square and is easy to find on foot from anywhere in the city center. Visiting during a Sunday mass gives a good sense of how the space is used in daily life.
