Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica, Animal rescue center in Cahuita, Costa Rica.
The Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica is a care facility in Cahuita dedicated to treating, nurturing, and releasing injured and orphaned sloths back to the wild. The grounds contain separate areas for medical treatment, animal housing, visitor observation areas, and educational displays about sloth biology and habitat needs.
The sanctuary began in 1992 when founders received their first orphaned three-toed sloth and eventually established the formal facility in 1997. Since then it has grown into a major center for sloth rehabilitation and conservation work across the region.
The sanctuary offers visitors a chance to observe sloths in a setting that resembles their natural habitat and to learn directly from staff about how these animals live. These encounters help people understand the animals' daily routines and why protecting them matters.
The facility is open during daytime hours and offers guided tours where visitors follow set paths through the grounds to observe the sloths. Wearing light, breathable clothing and bringing insect repellent are helpful since you will be walking through a tropical forest environment.
The sanctuary raises orphaned sloths from infancy and prepares them for release into the forest through specialized rehabilitation techniques. A significant number of sloths cared for here eventually return to live in the wild across Costa Rica's forests.
