Volcán Barú National Park, Mountain national park in Chiriquí Province, Panama.
Volcán Barú National Park is a protected area spanning approximately 14,325 hectares with five distinct ecosystems ranging from cloud forests to tropical hardwood forests. The terrain supports diverse animal species across these varied habitats.
The park was established in 1976 and contains an active stratovolcano that has experienced multiple earthquake swarms. Notable seismic events occurred in 1930, 1965, 1985, and 2006, reflecting the region's ongoing volcanic activity.
The volcanic soil in the region supports production of Geisha coffee, one of the world's most expensive coffee varieties. Local farmers cultivate beans with distinctive flavor characteristics using the special conditions on the mountain slope.
Access to the park typically goes through the town of Boquete, where hiking trails of varying difficulty levels are available. Four-wheel-drive vehicles can be used to reach higher-elevation areas.
From the summit at approximately 3,474 meters, visitors can see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on clear days. This location marks Panama's highest geographical point.
