Punta Chame, Coastal settlement in Panama Oeste Province, Panama.
Punta Chame is a coastal settlement on a narrow peninsula in Panama Oeste Province, about 70 kilometers west of Panama City. The area features grey-sand beaches and opens to the Pacific Ocean, creating long stretches of waterfront along much of its edge.
The peninsula's development was limited by salty ground conditions that prevented farming, which naturally pushed the population toward fishing. Over time, shrimp farming operations emerged as an economic foundation for the settlement.
Fishing shapes daily life here across generations, with residents working in fish farms and aquaculture operations that supply seafood to surrounding communities. This work follows the rhythm of the tides and determines when boats leave the docks.
Essential services like banks, medical clinics, and grocery stores are located about 30 minutes away in the nearby town of Chame. Visitors should handle shopping and errands there before venturing further into the settlement.
From November through April, steady winds blow across the peninsula, making it a recognized spot for windsurfing in the region. Athletes from different places come during this season to take advantage of these conditions.
