Lake Texcoco Ecological Park

Lake Texcoco Ecological Park covers a wide area of restored wetlands, water bodies, and open spaces northeast of central Mexico City. The landscape shifts between open water zones, reed beds, and planted areas crossed by paths and sports facilities.

The area was once part of a large lake that enabled farming through floating gardens built on the water. After centuries of drainage, restoration of the wetlands began gradually in recent decades.

The name recalls the lake that once sustained entire civilizations and now reappears in restored wetland sections across the reserve. Visitors can see how communities traditionally interacted with water through exhibits that show everyday practices tied to the former lake ecosystem.

The site offers soccer fields, basketball courts, baseball fields, bike paths, and running tracks spread across a large area. Visitors should prepare for changing ground conditions and distances between sections.

The wetlands serve as a stopover for migratory birds traveling between Alaska and South America. Observers can spot changing bird species depending on the season, as they rest or overwinter here.
