Hondo is a town in Medina County, located about 40 miles west of San Antonio in south-central Texas. The city sits on relatively flat terrain characteristic of the regional landscape.
An Army air field opened here in 1942 to train military personnel during World War II. The facility played a significant role in the war effort before closing when the conflict ended.
The Newton Gang executed two bank robberies on the same night in Hondo during the early 1920s, marking a notable event in Texas criminal history.
The town center is easy to navigate on foot and contains shops and services for visitors. A car is most practical for traveling between locations in the area.
The Hondo Lions Club installed a sign reading 'This is God's Country, Don't Drive Thru It Like Hell' in 1930, later modified with 'Please' in the 1940s.
