Buescher State Park

Buescher State Park, State park in Bastrop County, Texas.

Buescher State Park is a natural area covering about 1,000 acres with dense forests, a lake, and habitats for local wildlife. The grounds feature a network of trails, a lake for paddling, and spaces for fishing and camping.

Emil and Elizabeth Buescher donated the initial land in 1933, and the Civilian Conservation Corps then built facilities from local stone between 1933 and 1939. These early structures still shape the park's character today.

The park protects a section of the Lost Pines ecosystem, one of the westernmost natural pine forests in the country. Walking through these woods gives you a sense of a landscape that exists nowhere else in this region.

The park is easy to access with designated camping areas, fishing spots, and canoe rentals suitable for beginners. The trails are well-marked and many visitor areas have level, easy-walking ground.

A large portion of the park's original land was transferred to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1967 for research facilities. This shift reflects how protected lands can be repurposed for other important missions over time.
