The 1,016-acre terrain features a network of hiking trails through dense forests, a 30-acre lake, and natural habitats supporting diverse wildlife populations.
Emil and Elizabeth Buescher donated the initial 318 acres in 1933, with Civilian Conservation Corps constructing facilities using native stone between 1933 and 1939.
The park preserves sections of the Lost Pines ecosystem, containing the westernmost natural loblolly pine forest in the United States.
Visitors access camping areas, fishing spots, canoe rentals, and a 7.7-mile trail system, with additional connections to Bastrop State Park via Park Road 1.
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center operates a research facility on 700 acres of former parkland, transferred by the Texas Legislature in 1967.
