Menil Collection, Art museum in central Houston, United States
The Menil Collection is an art museum in central Houston spread across a residential neighborhood with several buildings. The main structure was designed by Renzo Piano and houses permanent exhibitions as well as rotating presentations featuring works from different periods and cultures.
Dominique and John de Menil founded the museum in 1987 to make their private collection, gathered over decades, accessible to the public. The building was constructed in a residential neighborhood where the couple had lived and collected art since the 1940s.
The name honors the de Menil couple, whose private collection is now open to all visitors without admission fees. The exhibition rooms display works from different centuries side by side, allowing visitors to experience shifting styles and eras as they walk through the galleries.
The museum is located on Sul Ross Street and opens Wednesday through Sunday from 11 AM to 7 PM without admission fees. Visitors can walk freely between the different buildings on the grounds and choose individual exhibition rooms based on their interests.
The surrounding neighborhood contains several gray-painted houses purchased by the foundation that visually harmonize with the main building. These homes remain occupied while simultaneously being part of the overall museum design.
