Moore's Fort

Moore's Fort is a twin blockhouse structure with defensive features like gun ports and thick wooden walls. The two building sections are connected by an open passageway, a typical layout of early Texas settlements.

John Henry Moore built this fortification in 1828 in response to Comanche raids threatening the region. It was later moved from its original location in La Grange to Round Top and remains the oldest structure in Fayette County.

The fort demonstrates how settlers organized defense and protected their growing communities. You can see this in the sturdy construction and the way rooms were arranged for coordinated protection.

Bring extra layers of clothing since interior spaces can be cool and drafty, especially in winter months. Guided tours are regularly offered and provide a solid overview of the construction and daily life during that era.

The structure was relocated in the 1970s from its original northern location through an ambitious and careful move. This transfer happened because locals and historians valued preserving the original building rather than creating a replica.
