Independence Heights Residential Historic District
Independence Heights Residential Historic District, National Register Historic District in North Houston, US.
Independence Heights Residential Historic District is a residential neighborhood in North Houston composed of houses in American Craftsman style featuring exposed rafters and natural materials. These homes spread throughout the area and together form the National Register listed historic district.
The neighborhood developed in the early 1900s as an independent settlement and was incorporated into Houston in the late 1920s. This annexation transformed its governance while preserving its residential character.
This neighborhood was one of the first places in Houston where African Americans built and governed their own community independently. Today residents shape the area through their connection to its history and to each other.
The area is accessible by public transportation from central Houston through multiple transit routes. Guided walking tours help visitors examine the architectural details and features of individual houses more closely.
The houses display characteristic design features from the 1920s and 1930s, including low-pitched roofs and detailed woodwork. These details reflect the craftsmanship techniques common to that era.
