Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is a county seat in Gillespie County, located in central Texas, where main streets are lined with buildings featuring timber framing and historic facades. The surrounding area is marked by rolling hills planted with orchards and vineyards, while the town center hosts several museums and boutiques.

Colonists from Germany founded the settlement in the mid-nineteenth century and named it after a Prussian nobleman to honor their origin. The residents built their homes following the traditions of the old country and kept their language alive for several generations.

The town center displays bilingual street signs and storefronts that recall the time when German was the main language spoken here. Many shops and inns carry German names and serve dishes like schnitzel or bratwurst, enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

The center is easy to explore on foot, as most sights and shops are close together. For trips to the surrounding vineyards and orchards, having your own vehicle is advisable.

Several shops in the center open before sunrise so visitors can sample freshly baked bread and pastries made from old recipes early in the day. On weekends, the sidewalks fill with musicians playing traditional tunes on accordion and fiddle.
