Coryell County, County division in central Texas, US
Coryell County extends across 1,031 square miles of plateaus and grasslands, with elevations ranging from 600 to 1,493 feet above sea level.
The Texas Legislature established Coryell County in 1854, naming it after frontiersman James Coryell, who was killed during conflicts with Caddo Indians.
Native Americans, including Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche tribes, established settlements along the Leon River starting from 4500 BC.
The county contains two major waterways: the Leon River in the north and east, and Cowhouse Creek serving the western and southern regions.
Twenty-five percent of Coryell County qualifies as prime farmland, supporting native trees like red cedar, live oak, Spanish oak, burr oak, and pecan.
