Milam County, County seat in Central Texas, United States.
Milam County extends across 1,022 square miles of terrain, including blackland prairie zones and post oak savannah regions between Austin and Dallas.
The county was established in 1837 and named after Benjamin Rush Milam, who fought in the Texas Revolution against Mexican forces.
The territory holds evidence of Native American settlements, including Tonkawa communities that inhabited the San Gabriel River area since 4500 BC.
Six independent school districts operate within the county borders, serving communities such as Cameron, Milano, Rockdale, Thorndale, Gause, and Buckholts.
The county contains three major water systems: the Brazos River forming its northeastern boundary, Little River, and the San Gabriel River.
