Cameron, County seat in central Texas, United States.
Cameron is a city in central Texas located at the junction of U.S. Highways 77 and 190 in Milam County. The town sits about 70 miles northeast of Austin and has a compact downtown area with local shops, restaurants, and residential neighborhoods.
The city formed in 1846 when county commissioners purchased land to establish the Milam County seat and named it after Ewen Cameron, a Scottish highlander. This founding decision shaped the town's role as the administrative center of the county.
The Milam County Historical Museum and Old Town Cameron Railroad Museum display regional history through collections and exhibitions on display. You can see how people worked and lived in earlier times when you visit.
Wilson-Ledbetter Park offers hiking trails, bird watching, and picnic areas spread across a large green space near the center. It is a good place to spend time outdoors and take a break from exploring the town.
The El Camino Real de los Tejas, a 17th-century Spanish trade route, passed through this area and left behind historical traces that visitors can still discover. Several of these historic sites remain marked and accessible around and within the town.
