Hutto, Railroad city in Williamson County, Texas.

Hutto is a residential city in Williamson County, located approximately 22 miles northeast of Austin. The community developed around a railroad station established in the 1870s and maintains a rural character today.

The Texas Land Company purchased land from James Hutto in 1876 to establish a railroad station that formed the foundation of the modern settlement. This railroad-driven origin shaped the area's early development and growth.

Swedish and German settlers shaped the area by establishing farms and ranches that became central to local life. Their heritage remains visible in the rural character and agricultural traditions that define the community today.

The city is accessible by highway and offers schools and basic services within its limits. Visitors should know that the area is mostly rural, so major amenities and shopping are better found in nearby Austin.

A circus train accident in 1915 caused a hippopotamus to escape, and the animal was later adopted as the city's official mascot. This unusual event remains a distinctive part of local identity today.
