Prairie View A&M University, Land-grant university in Prairie View, Texas
Prairie View A&M University is a public land-grant institution in Prairie View, Texas, spreading across a large campus with eight academic colleges. The facility offers programs in sciences, engineering, agriculture, and humanities, featuring modern classrooms and research buildings throughout its grounds.
The institution began in 1876 as Alta Vista Agriculture & Mechanical College for formerly enslaved people after the Civil War. It later became part of the Texas A&M system and grew over the decades into a full university with a broad range of disciplines.
The campus opened when African Americans had no access to higher education, serving from the start as a space for academic advancement. Students from across the United States gather here today, forming a community rooted in shared purpose and pride.
Visitors can explore the grounds during daytime and find signage directing to various buildings and facilities around the campus. The John B. Coleman Library is open to the public and provides access to collections and reading rooms during regular hours.
A gift of 50 million dollars from MacKenzie Scott reached the institution in 2020, enabling new scholarships and the expansion of research programs. This donation remains the largest single contribution the college has ever received.
