The county spans 865 square miles with dense forests of pine and hardwood trees, bordered by the Angelina River and Neches River.
Founded in 1846 from Nacogdoches County, the region was named after a Hasinai Native American woman who assisted early Spanish missionaries.
The county distinguishes itself as one of the few East Texas regions that voted against secession from the Union during the Civil War in 1861.
The George H. Henderson Jr. Exposition Center serves as a primary venue for community events, with regular county meetings held on second and fourth Tuesdays.
Sam Rayburn Reservoir covers 114,500 acres within the county, supporting municipal needs and providing extensive water recreation opportunities.
