Alvarado Park Lake

Alvarado Park Lake, reservoir in Johnson County, Texas

Alvarado Park Lake is a reservoir in Texas covering approximately 437 acres with a maximum depth of about 20 feet (6 meters). Native plants grow along the shoreline, including bulrush and cattail, while the water often appears stained and murky in color.

The lake was built in 1966 by Jack P. McKinney to protect the area from flooding and provide water storage. Since then, it has served the community as both a flood control and recreation resource.

The lake serves as a community gathering place where neighbors meet to fish, share tips, and teach children how to cast. This relaxed, social atmosphere reflects how local residents value outdoor recreation and connection by the water.

The lake is accessible from US Highway 67 and has a boat ramp for fishing access. Visit during daylight hours and check water levels beforehand, as the lake level fluctuates depending on weather and seasonal conditions.

Local fishing stories often recount tales of large largemouth bass caught early in the morning near shoreline reeds and waiting to surprise unsuspecting anglers. Evening catfish catches from the boat docks have also become part of the lake's fishing lore.
