Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist

The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist stands downtown and displays Dutch Romanesque Revival architecture with a large red and white brick facade. The building occupies a prominent position in the city and features characteristic architectural elements of this style.

The cathedral site began in 1821 with a land donation, and the current building was completed in 1916 after three years of construction. This completion marked an important milestone for the local religious community.

The interior displays stained glass windows from Munich showing scenes of Saint John, alongside oil paintings of Christ and the Apostles on the walls. These artworks create a deeply religious setting for worship and reflection.

The building is open to the public during regular Mass services, allowing visitors to attend liturgical celebrations. The adjacent historic cemetery offers a place to walk and learn about the site's long history.

A Casavant Freres organ inside provides the musical foundation for services and special events. The seven-acre complex also includes the Bishop's residence and holds recognition as a nationally significant historic site.
