Shincal

Shincal is an extensive ancient Inca settlement near Belén in northwestern Argentina. The site contains numerous stone structures arranged around a central plaza and spreads across a valley floor between two rivers.

The settlement was established in the 1400s and became an important Inca administrative center in their southern frontier region. It remained occupied until the Spanish conquest in the mid-1500s.

The main square features a ceremonial platform where Inca leaders gathered to conduct rituals and hold gatherings. People who visit can walk around the stone structures and sense how important this communal space was for the settlement.

The archaeological site sits in a mountain valley and is best visited during cooler months when paths are easier to walk. A visitor center marks the entrance and provides information for exploring the grounds.

Two large earthen mounds with stone staircases flank the main plaza and may have been used for special ceremonies connected to sun worship. This unusual arrangement sets this place apart from other Inca settlements.
