Congonhas-São Paulo Airport, Domestic airport in Vila da Saúde, Brazil
Congonhas-São Paulo is a commercial airport in Vila da Saúde, Brazil, serving primarily domestic routes. The facility covers 1.6 million square meters with two runways and a passenger terminal at an elevation of 802 meters (2,630 feet).
A study conducted in 1935 led to the opening in 1936, providing the city with a flood-resistant aviation facility. Over the following decades the terminal grew into one of the main hubs for Brazilian domestic traffic.
The name comes from Viscount Congonhas do Campo and from a native plant species that once grew in this area. Today business travelers rely on the terminal for short domestic flights between Brazil's largest cities.
The terminal sits about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of the city center and is accessible by several roads. Passenger traffic is often heavy, so allowing extra time for security checks and finding your gate is advisable.
The facility handles over 21 million passengers each year even though its planned capacity stands at 17.1 million. This makes it the second most frequented airport in Brazil.
