Mohéli

Located in the Indian Ocean north of the Mozambique Channel, Mohéli spans across valleys and mountains with white sand beaches along its coastline.

The island became a French protectorate in 1849 when Queen Jumbe-Fatima signed an agreement to protect her territory from neighboring rivalries.

The population consists of Arab, Bantu, European, Malaysian, and Malagasy ethnic groups, with Islam being the predominant religion of the inhabitants.

Two distinct seasons characterize Mohéli, with temperatures reaching 30°C during the wet period from December to April and dropping to 19°C from May to November.

The Marine Park of Mohéli, established in 1999, serves as a nesting ground for green turtles and received the United Nations Equatorial Initiative Prize in 2002.
