Mohéli

Mohéli is a volcanic island in the Comoros that rises in valleys and mountains with white sand beaches fringing its coastline. The interior is green and undulating, while small fishing villages dot the shores.

The island was established as a French protectorate in 1849 when Queen Jumbe-Fatima signed a protection agreement. This arrangement helped shield the territory from regional conflicts and shaped its later development.

The inhabitants speak Swahili and French and follow Islam as their main faith. Daily life in the villages moves at a slower pace, centered around fishing and traditional crafts passed down through generations.

The island has two distinct seasons: December through April is warm and wet, while May through November is cooler. Visitors should prepare for these varying conditions and adapt to the island's natural rhythm.

A marine sanctuary was created in 1999 and serves as a nesting ground for green sea turtles. The reserve has become one of the most important breeding sites for this species in the region.
