Grand Mosque of West Sumatra, Grand mosque in Padang, Indonesia
The Grand Mosque of West Sumatra is a house of worship in Padang with an oval metal roof and steel reinforcements resting on four concrete pillars. The building reaches 52 meters in height and offers three levels that can accommodate up to 6000 worshippers.
Construction work began in December 2007 under the supervision of the regional governor. Funding came from both public resources and donations from the population.
The mosque displays traditional carvings and wooden wall panels that recall the region's old craftsmanship. These elements give the interior a warm feeling and connect the building with local design traditions.
The mosque has an elevator that travels up to the second floor at about 44 meters high. From there, visitors can enjoy the view over the city and observe the surrounding buildings.
The building was fitted with a special construction that withstands earthquakes. The second floor serves as a gathering point in case of emergency when the ground shakes.
