Canning, Electoral division in Perth metropolitan area, Australia
The Division of Canning is an electoral district that covers the southern suburbs of Perth, extending into portions of Mandurah and Rockingham. It spans diverse neighborhoods ranging from urban areas to more suburban communities across Western Australia.
The division takes its name from Alfred Canning, a surveyor who explored important supply routes across Western Australia in the early 1900s. More than a century later, its boundaries were redrawn when sections were transferred to a newly created electoral district.
The electoral division recognizes Traditional Owners through formal acknowledgments while serving diverse communities across urban and suburban neighborhoods of Western Australia.
The area is straightforward to navigate, combining clearly defined suburban sections and urban neighborhoods. Residents and visitors can easily identify which areas belong to the division by using basic landmarks such as main roads and suburb names.
In 2016, a section of the division was transferred to form the new Division of Burt, reflecting population growth in the region. This boundary change showed how electoral divisions adapt to urban expansion.
