Taroona Beach, Beach in Taroona, Tasmania
Taroona Beach is approximately 500 meters of shoreline facing south toward Storm Bay and the Tasman Sea. The coast offers views across the Derwent estuary toward the northern tip of Bruny Island.
In 1810, sailor Joseph Batchelor was buried at the site, marking the location of the oldest known European grave in Tasmania. This burial demonstrates the region's early contact with European seafarers.
The name Taroona comes from the Mouheneener language and refers to a type of sea snail found in the rocky tidal areas. These molluscs are part of the natural coastal environment that visitors can spot in the shallow waters.
The beach has a boat ramp, toilets, and a skate park, with a tennis club and bowls club located in the adjacent park. Visitors will find all the facilities needed for a full day visit.
A southern right whale was born near the beach in 2010, the first whale birth recorded in the Derwent estuary since 1820. This rare event shows that these waters remain an important location for migrating marine mammals.
