Misantla, Municipality in Veracruz, Mexico
Misantla is a municipality in Veracruz situated in a valley between mountain ranges. The town spreads along the Misantla River, which shapes the landscape and supplies water to the settlement.
Spanish settlers founded the town in 1564 at the junction of two rivers and relocated the population from an earlier village to this new site. This location became the center of Spanish administration in the region.
The name comes from the Nahuatl language and reflects the indigenous roots of the area. Totonac heritage remains visible in local buildings and customs that residents maintain today.
The municipality is accessible via two main highways that connect to other parts of the state. From here, it takes roughly two hours to reach the state capital of Xalapa.
The area is known for growing high-quality vanilla pods, a plant with deep roots in the region. The Totonac people cultivated vanilla long before it became known to the outside world.
