Green Lake, Natural tidal lake in Calhoun County, Texas
Green Lake is a large freshwater lake located on the Gulf Coastal Plain in Calhoun County, west of Port Lavaca. The water stretches across flat terrain with marshy shorelines that create habitat for fish and birds, making it popular for recreational boating and angling.
Settlers from Kentucky arrived in the 1850s to establish cotton plantations near the lake. The Civil War transformed the region's economy and brought an end to the plantation era.
The Karankawa people once made their home here, hunting and fishing in the waters and wetlands. Archaeological remains scattered around the lake tell the story of their life in this coastal region.
