Kingston, Capital and port city in southeastern Jamaica
The capital city stretches along the southeastern coast of Jamaica, sheltered by the Palisadoes peninsula and backed by the Blue Mountains. The urban area consists of several neighborhoods, including the business district downtown, residential areas in the hills, and the harbor area along the waterfront.
The settlement was founded in 1692 after an earthquake destroyed Port Royal, and it quickly developed into the administrative and commercial center of the island. Later it became the capital of Jamaica and played an important role in Caribbean history.
On the streets and in the parks, you will hear reggae and dancehall, and the city is considered the home of these music styles, which are present everywhere in daily life. On weekends, the markets fill with vendors selling fruit, spices and handmade goods, while people chat and bargain in a lively manner.
Norman Manley International Airport links the city to many destinations, while the harbor receives cargo ships and cruise vessels throughout the year. The best time to visit is between December and April, when the weather is drier and more comfortable.
The grounds of the University of the West Indies at Mona were used as a sugar plantation in the 18th century, and some old buildings are still visible on campus. Today the institution serves as the main academic center for the entire Caribbean region and attracts students from many island nations.
