Los Alcarrizos, Municipality in Santo Domingo Province, Dominican Republic
Los Alcarrizos is a municipality forming the northern residential zone of the Santo Domingo metropolitan region on relatively flat terrain. The area consists of planned neighborhoods with residential blocks, local businesses, schools, and community facilities distributed throughout.
The area developed from an 18th-century trading post connecting Santo Domingo with the Cibao region before becoming a modern municipality in 2005. Planned neighborhoods were built to accommodate families relocated as part of national development initiatives during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Multiple religious communities shape the area, with churches and chapels serving as gathering places for residents from different faiths. These spaces anchor neighborhood life and bring people together for shared celebrations throughout the year.
The municipality connects to Santo Domingo through multiple highways, making it easy to reach from the city center and surrounding areas. The Dr. Balaguer International Airport is located nearby, providing convenient air access for visitors.
Between 1990 and 1994, the municipality grew through deliberately constructed neighborhoods built specifically to resettle families from other parts of the country. This planned expansion made it one of the first large-scale organized relocation projects in the metropolitan region.
