Las Américas International Airport, International airport in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.
Las Américas International Airport is an international airport in La Caleta, Dominican Republic, with five concourses. The modern terminal provides enough space to handle several wide-body aircraft simultaneously and processes both passenger and cargo traffic.
The facility opened in 1959 under the name Ciudad Trujillo and initially served both military and civil aviation. In 2002, the airport received its current name in honor of José Francisco Peña Gómez.
The facility carries the name of a prominent politician who shaped Dominican history. Travelers from the diaspora use this place regularly to maintain their ties to the island and reunite families.
The grounds sit roughly 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Santo Domingo and connect to the capital via an expressway. Travelers should plan between 20 and 40 minutes for the journey depending on traffic conditions.
The runway extends for 3,355 meters (11,007 feet) and ranks as the longest in the Dominican Republic. More than 160 million kilograms (355 million pounds) of cargo move through here each year, making it a key logistics hub for the region.
