Hermanas Mirabal Province, Province in Cibao region, Dominican Republic
Hermanas Mirabal is a province in the Cibao region made up of three municipalities: Salcedo, Tenares, and Villa Tapia. The territory spans agricultural lands that support farming and trade activities for the surrounding area.
The province was created in 1952 when it separated from Espaillat under the name Salcedo. It was renamed in 2007 to honor the Mirabal sisters, who were killed in 1960.
The three Mirabal sisters represent resistance to dictatorship and shape how people in the region understand their own history. You can see their influence reflected in local memory and community identity.
The region is easiest to explore starting from Tenares, where most services and lodging are located. Roads connecting the three municipalities are rural, so plan your routes accordingly.
A museum dedicated to the Mirabal sisters holds their personal belongings and historical records from their lives. The collection offers a direct connection to the story of these resistance fighters.
