Southwest Florida International Airport, International airport in Fort Myers, United States.
Southwest Florida International Airport is the international airport serving the Fort Myers region in the southwest of Florida. The facility includes one terminal with three concourses and a long runway running parallel to wetlands.
The airport opened in May 1983 and became the new main hub for commercial aviation in the area. It replaced the smaller Page Field airfield that had provided commercial connections until then.
Departure gates display works by local artists showing palms, mangroves and coastal life. Travelers also see exhibitions about the region's history and natural environment throughout the waiting areas.
The terminal sits roughly 10 miles southeast of downtown Fort Myers and is reached by highway. The facility offers parking, car rental services and regular shuttle connections to beach towns along the coast.
Large areas of natural swampland remain around the runway and provide habitat for native bird species. Passengers can often spot herons and other wading birds among the mangroves during takeoff or landing.
