Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a nature preserve in Florida featuring a 2.25-mile boardwalk that winds through different wetland environments. The trail crosses through the largest remaining stand of old-growth bald cypress forest in North America, allowing visitors to see these ancient trees up close.

The National Audubon Society took over management of this site in 1955 and constructed the boardwalk to protect cypress trees from logging. The location has since remained a landmark for conservation efforts in the region.

This sanctuary serves as a major stop along the Great Florida Birding Trail, drawing visitors who want to watch water birds in their natural setting. Thousands of migratory birds pass through during their journeys, making it a gathering place for birdwatchers from across the region.

The site lies roughly 30 miles northeast of Naples and welcomes visitors daily, with early morning hours offering the best chance to see birds and wildlife. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the entire route follows the boardwalk, and bring insect repellent, especially during warmer months.

The site holds the largest wood stork nesting colony in the United States, a species rarely seen elsewhere. These tall wading birds build their nests in the tallest cypress trees and are most active during early morning and late afternoon hours.
