Highlands County spans 1,106 square miles in central Florida, containing Lake Istokpoga and bordered by the Kissimmee River on the eastern boundary.
The Florida Legislature established Highlands County in 1921 when it separated from DeSoto County, along with Charlotte, Glades, and Hardee counties.
The county maintains three public library branches through the Heartland Library Cooperative, located in Avon Park, Lake Placid, and Sebring.
Five elected County Commissioners and an appointed County Administrator manage the county operations, implementing decisions and policies for 101,235 residents.
Lake Istokpoga connects to the Kissimmee River through two engineered waterways: the Istokpoga canal and the C41 outflow canal.
