Big Shoals State Park, Nature reserve along Suwannee River in White Springs, Florida.
Big Shoals State Park is a nature reserve along the Suwannee River, where limestone bluffs rise about 80 feet above the water and create whitewater rapids. The landscape features steep banks, wooded areas, and flowing water that extend for several miles.
The area was used for thousands of years by Native American communities who lived along the Suwannee River banks. Over time, the land was protected to preserve this natural environment for future generations.
The park forms part of a larger network of natural areas connected by hiking paths, encouraging visitors to explore the region step by step.
The park has two separate entrances offering about 28 miles of trails for walking and biking with different route options. The paths connect different sections of the grounds, allowing visitors to choose based on available time and interests.
The rapids intensify when the Suwannee River water level rises to a certain height, making the river more interesting for experienced paddlers. This shift happens with natural seasonal changes that alter the character of the place throughout the year.
