Andersonville, Administrative district in Sumter County, Georgia, US

Andersonville is a small city in Sumter County, Georgia, situated near the Central of Georgia railroad. The town covers roughly 1.4 square miles and lies about 60 miles southwest of Macon.

The settlement was originally called Anderson Station in 1853 but changed its name when establishing a post office to avoid confusion with Anderson, South Carolina. This rename marked an important moment in the town's early development.

The town draws visitors with interests in American Civil War history through its preserved buildings and memorial sites. These structures remain central to how people experience and understand the place today.

The local climate is mild with average temperatures around 60°F (15°C) in January rising to 92°F (33°C) in July, with annual rainfall around 49 inches (1250 mm). Plan your visit with seasonal weather in mind and dress appropriately for changing conditions.

Large mining operations started in the 1960s transformed thousands of acres of scrub oak wilderness into an industrial site. This shift became a defining moment in the town's economic story.
