Waycross, Railroad hub city in Ware County, Georgia, US
Waycross is a city in Ware County, Georgia, covering about 11.7 square miles at an elevation of 130 feet (40 meters). Six railway lines meet here, forming a dense network of tracks, bridges, and switches.
The settlement began in 1820 as Old Nine and took the name Tebeauville in 1857. When it was incorporated as a town in 1874, it received its current name reflecting the many railway crossings.
The name comes from the six railway lines that cross here and still shape how the town looks. Many brick buildings recall the days when trains and freight yards defined daily routines.
The street grid often runs parallel to the railway tracks, making navigation easier. Six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school spread across the area offer glimpses into the local education system.
In the 1950s, police officers personally directed out-of-town drivers to local lodgings. This early form of tourism support helped travelers find a place to stay.
