Fayetteville is a county seat south of Atlanta in Georgia. The town spreads over a smaller area with residential neighborhoods, historic buildings, and an older downtown dating from the early 19th century.
The town was incorporated in 1823 and named in honor of the French general. The courthouse from this period remains the oldest surviving judicial building in Georgia.
The town carries the name of Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Visitors today notice the film studios south of downtown, where parts of Marvel movies and other major productions are regularly shot.
The courthouse in the center doubles as a visitor information point and offers orientation about the area. The local library holds many materials related to Civil War history.
Ed Johnson became the first African American mayor in 2015, after leading the local chapter of the NAACP for many years. This election marked a turning point in recent town history.
