The June 1962 Alcatraz Escape was a daring and intricate plan carried out by inmates Frank Morris, and brothers Clarence Anglin and John Anglin.
Despite a massive manhunt, the prisoners were never found, making this escape one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in U.S. history.
The event has since been the subject of numerous books and films, most notably the 1979 film 'Escape from Alcatraz' starring Clint Eastwood.
Today, visitors can take guided tours of Alcatraz Island and learn about its varied history as a military fortification, federal prison and a symbol of Native American activism.
This is regarded as the most famous of the 14 attempts to escape from the island prison.
