The community is known for large illuminated stars displayed throughout town, which earned it the nickname "The City of Stars." This distinctive local identity shapes how residents and visitors experience the place.

In 1989, a whale named Humphrey became known nationwide after stranding on local mudflats and being rescued successfully. This unusual event remains part of how the place is remembered.
