Children's Fairyland is a storybook theme park for toddlers in Oakland, California, extending across 10 acres near Lake Merritt and containing fairy tale play areas, miniature rides, and an animal area for young visitors. The attractions follow familiar fairy tales and nursery stories, with low structures scaled to preschool height.
The Oakland Lake Merritt Breakfast Club built this facility in 1950, establishing it as the first storybook theme park in the United States. The venue served as an inspiration for later theme parks and influenced their design.
The Open Storybook Puppet Theater presents daily performances from a collection of 150 different shows, maintaining traditional puppetry techniques and storytelling methods. The performances target toddlers and follow a gentle pace appropriate for that age group.
The facility opens Friday through Sunday between 10 AM and 4 PM and requires adults to be accompanied by children. Visitors may bring their own food.
Walt Disney visited the facility in 1950 before developing Disneyland and recruited its first director, Dorothy Manes, as youth coordinator for his future project. The spatial design and approach to young visitors influenced his planning.
