Portland International Airport, International airport in Portland, United States
Portland International Airport is an international commercial airport along the Columbia River and serves as the main aviation hub for Oregon with several terminals and runways. The facility includes passenger areas with shops and dining as well as separate zones for cargo and private aircraft.
The Port of Portland founded the airport in 1936 during the Great Depression and employed about 1000 workers through the Works Progress Administration program. Over the following decades the facility expanded step by step with new terminals and longer runways for larger aircraft.
Display areas throughout the facility present work by local artists and rotating installations from the Pacific Northwest year-round. A small cinema regularly screens short films and documentaries by regional filmmakers in a dedicated screening room inside the terminals.
The MAX Red Line light rail connects the terminals directly to downtown Portland and offers a quick alternative to car or taxi. Additional ground transport options such as shuttle buses and rental cars serve destinations across the wider region around the airport.
The airport handles most passenger flights in Oregon as well as nearly all air cargo movements in the state and counts many millions of travelers each year. This central role makes it an important hub for the entire Pacific Northwest region of the United States.
