Hood River, County seat in Oregon, United States.
Hood River is a small city at the junction of the Hood River and Columbia River in Oregon. It sits about 60 miles (96 kilometers) east of Portland between forested slopes on one side and the wide riverbed on the other.
The settlement began in the late 19th century as a trading post and ferry station along the Columbia River. When the surrounding county was formed in 1908, it became the administrative center for the area.
The downtown area is home to small shops that sell regional fruit varieties and handcrafted goods. Residents often gather in the cafés along the main street before and after their time on the water.
Most points of interest along the waterfront are within walking or cycling distance because the layout is compact. Visitors interested in water sports can find rental stations and public launch areas right by the shore.
Because of the particular wind patterns in the gorge, athletes travel from far away to ride the waves while the water itself often appears very calm. On some days, beginners and experienced competitors share the same stretch of river at the same time.
