Uplands, Historic residential district in Oak Bay, Canada
Uplands is a historic residential neighborhood in Oak Bay covering 188 hectares with estate-sized lots and curved streets designed for a garden-like setting. Ornate green lamp posts line the pathways, and mature trees shade the winding roads that define the area's quiet character.
The neighborhood was established in 1907 when the Turner brothers purchased the land and hired landscape architect John Olmsted to design its residential layout. This early master plan shaped the area's distinctive street patterns and lot arrangements, which have remained largely unchanged since then.
The Royal Victoria Yacht Club within the neighborhood remains deeply woven into local social life and represents a long tradition of maritime culture in the region. Residents maintain the area's character through their private estates and gardens, which form much of what visitors see when walking through the tree-lined streets.
Visitors can explore Uplands Park, which offers boat launch ramps, a War Memorial, and numerous walking trails through the neighborhood. The best times to visit are the warmer months when the tree-lined paths are most enjoyable and easier to navigate.
The area contains one of Canada's largest concentrations of endangered plant species within its Garry Oak meadow ecosystems. These rare habitats are often overlooked by visitors, yet they represent a significant ecological treasure found within the residential neighborhood.
