Saanich Commonwealth Place, Recreation and aquatic center in Saanich, Canada
Saanich Commonwealth Place is a recreation and aquatic center featuring a 50-meter competition pool, a dive tank, and a wave pool under one roof. The building is topped with a distinctive red square pyramid dome that makes it visually recognizable from a distance.
The center opened in 1993 to host swimming events for the 1994 Commonwealth Games held in Victoria. After the games, it remained as a public facility for community use.
The site houses the Bruce Hutchison Branch library, making it a multipurpose gathering space where neighbors meet for different interests. Swimmers and readers share the building, giving it a lived-in, community-focused character.
The facility opens early in the morning around 5:30 AM on weekdays and closes at 10 PM, with shorter hours on weekends. Parking is plentiful on-site, making it easy to access by car.
The dome structure uses sound absorption panels and angled windows that let swimmers see the sky while doing backstroke. This design creates an unusual experience where water-based exercise feels connected to the outdoors above.
