White Rock, Coastal city in Metro Vancouver, Canada
White Rock is a coastal city in Metro Vancouver Regional District, British Columbia, stretching along Semiahmoo Bay. A wooden pier about 470 meters (1540 feet) long extends into the water, and the beach runs alongside a wide promenade.
The railway line and pier were built in the early years of the 20th century, turning this area into a popular waterfront destination. The community gained city status in 1957.
The town takes its name from a large boulder resting on the shore that receives regular coats of white paint. Locals and visitors walk along the seafront promenade and gather at cafés lining Marine Drive throughout the year.
Buses connect this place with Vancouver and surrounding communities in Metro Vancouver Regional District. Summer months are warm and dry, while winter brings cooler and often damp conditions.
The boulder on the beach is a glacial erratic carried here during the last ice age. City workers paint it every month to maintain the white color that gave this place its name.
