Tŝilhqox Biny, Mountain lake in West Chilcotin, Canada
Tŝilhqox Biny is an alpine lake in west-central British Columbia, Canada, stretching for 65 kilometers and reaching depths of 366 meters at its deepest point. Its water surface covers 180 square kilometers between mountains and forests.
The British Columbia government officially renamed the place in March 2019, working together with the Tŝilhqot'in National Government. This change replaced the earlier English name with the original designation.
The name comes from the Tŝilhqot'in language and reflects the deep connection this nation holds with the place. Fishers and paddlers today follow the same waterways that have been used for centuries.
The shoreline offers many access points for fishing, kayaking, and camping along the 65-kilometer (40-mile) waterfront. Water conditions can shift quickly, so visitors should watch for wind and waves.
This lake is the largest body of water above 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) elevation in British Columbia, holding 21.2 cubic kilometers of water. That makes it a major reservoir at this altitude.
