Scaled Composites Triumph, Experimental aircraft prototype in Mojave, United States.
The Scaled Composites Triumph is an experimental aircraft with a three-surface design, canard wings, and tail configuration, powered by two Williams turbofan engines. The plane was developed and built in Mojave to test and demonstrate new engine technology.
The aircraft made its first flight on July 12, 1988, at Mojave Airport, marking the debut of the Williams FJ44 turbofan engines. The plane served as a demonstrator for a new generation of efficient aircraft engines.
The aircraft earned its internal nickname 'Tuna' from its Cabin Twin designation, referencing Los Angeles radio personality Charlie Tuna during its development period.
The plane consumes about 60 percent less fuel than comparable aircraft while offering similar speeds. Visitors can see the plane in Mojave, where test flights and demonstrations took place.
Engineers originally planned three different versions with piston, propeller, and turbofan engines, but only the turbofan model was actually built. This focus concentrated on testing the new Williams engine technology.
